The title of the work is derived from Zhang Jian's commentary on The Emerald Bodhisattva.
Yao Yi-Wei(1922-1997) often employed a scriptwriting technique in his plays where he reinterprets existing texts or disguises characters within the script to create a double effect. This technique makes the unavoidable process of characterization and the resistance of human nature to being characterized become a contradictory force that pushes the plot forward. The wall images, which seem like psychological tests, and the audio content embedded in the wall include excerpts from three of Yao’s plays — The Emerald Bodhisattva, Sun, Fei-Hu, and Red Nose — that particularly manifest this double effect. In addition, it also includes Zhao Nandong and statements made by Yao Yi-Wei and Chen Yingzhen, based on their experiences of creation and imprisonment. Yao Yi-Wei’s preface for The Complete Works of Chen Yingzhen mentions his projection while reading Zhao Nandong, and Chen Yingzhen’s elegy for Yao Yi-Wei mentions his emotional reaction to reading Red Nose while in prison.
After following several rounds of "yes/no" options in a psychological test, the audience is guided to the audio excerpts from the above-mentioned texts. By juxtaposing the works of Yao and Chen and their mutual understanding of each other’s creations based on their respective experiences of imprisonment, the dilemma between human nature and characterization spills over from fictional texts into real-life situations, seemingly exposing traces of the creators’ critical intentions during an era when it was impossible to criticize.
